The Sentinel organises a number of major public events which help to celebrate success in the fields of business and sport – as well as recognising the unsung heroes of our communities.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of The Sentinel Business Awards. This year saw a record 150+ businesses and individuals nominated across the awards categories which are sponsored by organisations as diverse as JCB, Barclays, Keele Science Park, Staffordshire University, Brewin Dolphin and the Army reservist organization SaBRE. The awards culminate in a sell-out, gala dinner for 420 guests at the magnificent King’s Hall in Stoke.

Each year The Sentinel Business Awards gets bigger and better. It is now the highlight of the social calendar for the key movers and shakers across our patch.

Sentinel journalists organise the annual City of Stoke-on-Trent Sports Awards – now in their 39th year – which highlights endeavour and achievement by sportsmen and women, children and teams involved in grass roots sport. It also rewards coaches and provides an opportunity to induct key individuals into the Potteries Sporting Hall of Fame. The Sir Stanley Matthews Stoke City and Port Vale Footballer of the Year Awards are also presented as part of a gala dinner attended by 300+ guests. It is an event which attracts the cream of the city’s sporting talent as well as national and international sporting celebrities. Previous guests have included Lord Coe and Olympic gold medal winners James Cracknell and Sally Gunnell. Local VIPs include Stoke City and Port Vale stars, Gordon Banks OBE and darts maestro Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor. This year’s awards are sponsored by Ageas Insurance Solutions (AIS).

The Our Heroes Awards is an annual event, currently sponsored by the Aspire Group (previously organised in conjunction with Britannia) which recognizes unsung heroes from across our communities: From children of courage and charity to champions to emergency services personnel, NHS staff and Armed Forces people. Wonderful, heart-warming human interest stories are published in-paper and online from May 1 to July 31. Our shortlisted nominees are then invited to a star-studded gala dinner for 250 guests at the Moathouse Hotel, Festival Park, in September where they rub shoulders with VIPs including comedian Nick Hancock and stage star Jonathan Wilkes.

In addition to these major public events, Sentinel journalists regularly produce special supplements, pull-outs and souvenirs for clients and partner organisations ranging from Enjoy Staffordshire and the Douglas MacMillan Hospice to Stoke-on-Trent City Council and The Regent Theatre.

Events calendar:

  • Sentinel Business Awards – March 25, King’s Hall, Stoke
  • City of Stoke-on-Trent Sports Awards – June 5, King’s Hall, Stoke
  • Our Heroes Awards – September (date TBC), Moathouse Hotel, Etruria
